<image:title>About - “I Love Myself When I Am Laughing And Then Again When I Am Looking Mean & Impressive” - Zora Neale Hurston -</image:title>
<image:caption>(photo credit Terry Boddie) I am a seasoned visual artist who was born in San Francisco, CA and received my MA in Arts Politics from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. When I emerged from the Graduate Program at NYU, I had already established a reputation as a trustworthy spiritual ritual photographer. For many years, I have been compelled to examine memorialization and funerary practices of people of the West African diaspora as an excellent illustration of cultural continuity. I am also dedicated to the creation and promotion of positive and empowering images of People of African descent. I have spent more than a decade photographing funerals, memorials and other celebrations all over the world and have taught photography and visual culture in remote villages and urban centers. My work has been exhibited at the California African American Museum, The MOAD, SOMArts, The African American Art and Culture Complex, The New Museum and numerous private galleries and public art venues in places like Chicago, Detroit, Brooklyn, and Beijing. Additionally, my work is held in the permanent collections of The City of Oakland and the California African American museum. I will also share that I am super proud of having been a participant in the groundbreaking takeover of the New Museum in New York City with a collective called Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter. As a Capacity Building Consultant, I help grassroots organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area to gain the skills they need to bring their Social Justice visions into fruition. I assist with the creation of communications plans, strategic plans, board development, program evaluation, process improvement, volunteer management and much more. My work continues today with creative, administrative and technical support of organizations like The African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC) and with armaking, art exhibition/experience curation and hosting of community based educational presentations. Today, I live in Oakland, California with my little fur covered angel Brixton, my collection of vintage photos, my Artivist library, tons of old school comic books, vintage cameras, toys and 1980s cartoon memorabilia. I spend my personal time chillin with my pops, sorting photos in my family’s collection, taking close looks at random things, planning to fold my laundry (it never gets done) and dreaming up new perfect man mashups. (My current favorite is Malcolm Gladwell’s mind, Theaster Gates’ creativity and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s body). I enjoy international travel, awaiting the yearly release of Hot Cross Buns and doing my best to do my best.</image:caption>

<image:title>Portfolio - Installations - Skinned Coon Cap</image:title>
<image:caption>Skinned Coon cap is a commentary on, interrogation of and expression of disgust prompted by those who vote and act against their own interests. It is a representation of the political tendency to do so but still recognizes that the behavior takes many forms. The live-action, life representation of the ideas encapsulated in this piece can be seen when people of marginalized communities vote and act to support white supremacists and patriarchal ignoramuses. Those who, in exchange for access to white adjacency, accept money to serve as public mouthpieces and operatives for industries, organizations and political parties that have made it their business to harm and even kill their people. It speaks to the bondage that we choose because someone has dressed it up and made it sparkle so that it feels highbrow and more palatable to us. This piece explores the sad reality of internalized racism and self-hatred. It also serves to facilitate an expansion of our understanding of the role that psychological imbalance, low self-esteem and the absence of basic instincts for self-preservation play in the psyche of people who revere fascism and patriarchy even though those systems work to oppress them as members of the human body politic.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From Benin to the Bay is a multi-day series of events held in the San Francisco Bay Area that celebrates the Afrodiasporic journey of thought, traditions and creative expression alongside of visions of a future where African culture, spirituality and people thrive in the mainstream.</image:caption>

<image:title>Portfolio - Exhibition & Experience Curation - Same Game Different Smokers</image:title>
<image:caption>Same Game Different Smokers is an exploration of the troubling relationship the tobacco industry has had with the Black Community over the last 400+ years. A collection of archival ads and images are brought together to answer some extremely important questions. We interrogate the complex connection between increased demand for commercialized tobacco, the transatlantic slave trade, racialized advertising, targeted ad placement and the fact that 45000 African Americans die every year from tobacco-related illness. In recent times, the Nicotine Addiction industry has worked hard to create the next generation of smokers… shamelessly using social media and flavors to addict children. This is merely a page taken from Big Tobacco’s proverbial playbook as it has used menthol flavoring and strategic ad placement to attract and addict African Americans of all ages for more than 50 years. Same Game Different Smokers offers enriching food for thought which once fully digested, might bring about positive change in the lives of individuals and the community at large.</image:caption>

<image:title>Portfolio - Exhibition & Experience Curation - Smoke & Mirrors</image:title>
<image:caption>Co-Curated with Melorra Green and Melonie Green Smoke & Mirrors investigated the impacts of the war on drugs campaign. By exploring the messaging, propaganda, and branding historically used to shift the narrative about cannabis and hemp, the exhibition worked to dispel the myths about an ancient, healing plant. Using written and spoken words, statistical data, and images in this interdisciplinary exhibition, artists created beautiful evidence that will share experiences of men and women of color who have been impacted by the war on drugs, the evolution of cannabis policies, and facts about the healing properties of marijuana. In an interactive installation, visitors were invited to share their own experiences with cannabis. The exhibition hosted three public programming events: An opening reception, a Women of Color in Cannabis Talk and a Cannabis Conference - each educated and connected people of color to the cannabis industry and share numerous ways to be empowered during the green rush in the Bay Area and beyond.</image:caption>
